Ivins, UT – Matt McCarty has won the 2024 Black Desert Championship. This win marks his first PGA Tour win for the 26-year-old. Not only does he win the title, trophy, and 500 FedEx Cup points, but he will also earn $1.35 million.
The third event in the FedEx Cup Fall season is the inaugural playing of the Black Desert Championship. It marks the first time in over 60 years that the Tour has held an event in Utah. While the course is beautifully peaceful with black lava formations and red rock cliffs throughout, the players are anything but at peace. That’s because, after this Autumn series of events, only the top 61 through 125 will earn fully exempt status during next year’s PGA Tour season.
Rookie Matt McCarty had been on a tear all year, not on the PGA Tour, but on the Korn Ferry Tour. After winning three events on that tour this year he was automatically promoted. McCarty’s third start on the PGA Tour already has him looking like a seasoned veteran. He was calm, collected, and was hitting some of the best shots of the entire tournament to finish. He was downright dominant at times, carding a final round score of 67 and an overall score of 23-under-par overall.
Early in the day in the final round, the course was quite scorable and some players went very low. In particular, both Lucas Glover and Matti Schmid shot 62 and finished at 19 and 18-under respectively. Glover would finish tied for third place while Schmid would finish in fifth.
Kevin Streelman, who made his 301st cut on Tour this week, was also in the hunt. Coming into the day in second place, he had a chance to win only a few strokes back. Unfortunately he would falter a bit on the back nine with a double bogey on the 10th hole. He would finish in a tie for third with a score of 19-under par.
Next week, the Tour moves to Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. The young phenom Tom Kim will look to achieve a feat very few players have accomplished, winning the same PGA Tour event three times in a row. If he achieved the three-peat, he would be the first to do so since Steve Stricker in 2011 at the John Deere Classic. The only other players to have that on their golfing resume are Tiger Woods, Stuart Appleby, Johnny Miller, and Jack Nicklas.
