J.T. Poston Delivers W at 2024 Shriners Children’s Open
Las Vegas, NV – J.T. Poston (-22) won the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The 31-year-old American had a fantastic season in 2023 and has continued his fine form into the 2024 FedEx Fall. It is his third career win and first since the 2022 John Deere.
Poston beat out Doug Ghim by one stroke after entering the final round with a three stroke lead over him and four strokes over a large group of chasers. Ghim finished in solo second, 2 strokes ahead of Matti Schmid and Rico Hoey at -19.
Behind them were Michael Kim, Davis Thompson, and K.H. Lee in T5 at -18. First round leader Taylor Pendrith had to settle for solo eighth at -17 after he followed up his opening round 61 with a windy 71 on Friday.
The tournament had a bit of an odd cadence as heavy winds came through the area late Thursday, creating vastly different scoring conditions between the morning and afternoon waves. The wind continued, forcing a delay in play Friday. For example, the wind resulted in more than a 50 yard difference in driving distance on hole 9 between rounds 1 and 2.
Other players who had notable finishes included Gary Woodland, who finished T9 just over a year after his surgery to remove a tumor from his brain; Alejandro Tosti, the dimunutive and fiery Argentine, whose share of T9 will go a long way towards keeping his card; and Ian Gilligan, an amateur who flew up the leaderboard after making the cut with rounds of 65 and 66 to finish T16.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads across the Pacific to Japan for the ZOZO Championship. Keegan Bradley is the defending champion there and is not listed in the field as of Sunday. Players who will compete for the title include Max Homa, Sungjae Im, Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Sahith Theegala.
