Dublin, OH – Scottie Scheffler has won The Memorial Tournament for the second year in a row. This marks his 16th PGA Tour career win and his third win this year. Jack Nicklaus was there on the final green to give him the signature handshake, along with the title, trophy, and $4 million.
Making it look easy, Scheffler won the event by four strokes with a score of 10-under-par. He is putting together a career that can only be described as Hall of Fame worthy. The win today was the 4th shortest time taken between a 1st and 16th PGA Tour win behind only Sam Snead, Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
Right now, he is positively dominant. It is now Scheffler’s 106th consecutive week ranked number one in the world, with no signs of slowing down. Every aspect of his game was dialed this week as he was number one in the field in approach, scrambling, and tee-to-green metrics. This tournament was also his third win in just four starts and his 9th consecutive win when the outright leader after 54 holes.
The only other player who had a small chance to win was golf’s second-hottest player, Ben Griffin. Despite never winning a PGA Tour event before this year, he’d won two titles in his last five starts at both the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. While he had led by five strokes earlier in the week, he started today one shot back.
Despite a valiant surge with an eagle and birdie on the 15th and 16th holes, Griffin would ultimately lose and finish in second place to Scheffler after carding a double bogey on the 17th. He would score 6-under for the tournament. Sepp Straka, who won the Truist Championship just a few weeks ago, finished in third with a score of 5-under par.
The next PGA Tour event is the RBC Canadian Open. Last year, Robert Macintyre won with his father filling in as his caddy. He’ll look to repeat his emotional win and defend his title. After taking this week off, Rory McIlroy will be there looking to win, but will be joined by this week’s fourth-place finisher and top Canadian golfer, Nick Taylor.
