The Stance Caddy is a simple, easy to use training aid that helps you hone the fundamentals of ball position, alignment, and stance width.
Introduction
Everyone acknowledges that golf is an intimidating game, and this often causes players to leave important questions unasked. Basics like “How should I stand?” and “Where does the ball go?” get ignored because people don’t want to appear foolish. This is one reason why so many golfers have address positions that are…suboptimal.
The Stance Caddy is a training aid built to answer those “basic” questions and ingrain a fundamentally sound, consistent stance. If you want to “Take the guess work out of your footwork,” read on.
Set Up & Ease of Use
The Stance Caddy comes out of the box ready to use with no assembly required, but it is recommended that you size it to your body. There is a page of detailed instructions HERE, but the device is well-labeled and intuitive. Slide the white and black markers to your shoulder width, and you’re ready to go.
There are illustrations for where to place your lead foot, trail foot, and the ball. Again, the “How to Use” page offers step-by-step instructions for how to get the most out of the Stance Caddy, but most golfers will be able to intuitively put this to use.
For more advanced users, Stance Caddy has templates for using this trainer to hit draws and fades. There is also a section on their website for adaptations – what to do if the standard recommendation isn’t working for you – which I appreciate. The acknowledgement that golf is not one-size-fits-all is always welcome.
Effectiveness
The Stance Caddy is based on the famous diagram in Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. It instructs golfers on the fundamentals of stance width, ball positions, and alignment as well as providing a reference for a square club face. As you can see above, it teaches that the stance should get wider as the club gets longer. It also, more subtly, suggests that your stance gets more “closed” to the target line as the club gets longer to create a straight ball flight [more explanation of this HERE].
As with any training aid, some may quibble with the specifics – and The Stance Caddy acknowledges that players may want to adapt their recommendations – but the magic is in the consistency. If you’re hitting every practice shot with the same ball position, same alignment, and same stance width, it’s going to start to become ingrained. The ball is going to look correct in that spot a few inches from your left heel. When you head to the course, these fundamentals will be a given.
With regard to the templates for hitting draws and fades, I think they can be helpful for players who want very specific instructions. I don’t see many players going to the range with their template paper regularly, but some golfers want to know precisely how to set up their Stance Caddy, and this explains it. You can also learn about shaping the ball here: How to Hit a Draw and How to Hit a Fade.
Overall, The Stance Caddy is an “it works if you work it” training aid. There’s no magic here, just some good advice for making your set up more consistent and fundamentally sound. If you commit to using it, you’ll see good results.
Longevity
On the positive side, The Stance Caddy works for right and left handed golfers of all sizes. It’s also extremely portable, folding up to roughly 22″ X 2″ and weighing only a few ounces. Finally, this is a trainer that you can use indoors, outdoors, or even without hitting a ball. If you’re really committed to improving your set up, you could put it down in any environment and address a ball with different clubs.
In the negative column, there is nothing gamified here. It’s going to help you to be more consistent, but it won’t change your swing, and it won’t give you any feedback.
Overall, I would rate The Stance Caddy average for longevity.
Value
The Stance Caddy retails for $50 on their website HERE.
$50 is substantially less than the average training aid, which gives it a big head start on value. The Stance Caddy teaches solid fundamentals, and it’s effective if you use it. Can you emulate this with alignment sticks? Sure, but you’re paying for the ease of use, the removal of friction. I think The Stance Caddy is a solid value for a serious player.
Conclusion
The Stance Caddy is one of the few training aids that delivers precisely on its tagline – “Take the guesswork out of your footwork.” With regular use, this trainer will help you build a more consistent, fundamentally sound address position, which will lead to better ball striking and lower scores.
