Previous Iron Shaft: Nippon Modus 130 – Stiff

How did the Nippon Modus 110 feel? Overall these are close to the typical Nippon feeling, soft, solid shafts. I will say they do not feel quite as robust and smooth as the 130, but that is most likely due to the lighter weight profile. Regarding flex, these felt a bit softer than the 130 s flex I typically play, but play stronger than the modus 105x.

Did you gain distance with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts? I chose to review this iron shaft at my club’s driving range where I am very familiar the distances I typically hit each iron. I would not say there was a material gain in distance over the Modus 130s I have played for close to 10 years. I may have hit them a few yards farther due to the lighter weight, but I would not say they were a half club longer or there was a very noticeable difference. I will say they are lighter and easier to swing so I expect distance will be easier to maintain later in the round as I start to fatigue, which is one of the reasons I wanted to try a lighter weight profile this year.

Have you gained accuracy with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts? Yes, I believe I was hitting into a tighter area than my 130s. To me, the shaft performed as advertised, the mid and tip section felt fairly stiff and were very stabile, and even the softer handle section did not feel too soft, so overall I felt confident these shafts would hold up to the hardest swings and deliver accuracy. For reference, I did not like the Modus 120 which has a soft handle and stiff tip design, and these are not as radical of a profile. I have also played Modus 105x and felt they were a bit soft – the 110s tighten up the tip for sure.

Has your ball flight changed with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts? Overall, the ball flight was consistently flatter with the 110 and the ball visibly reached a slightly lower apex than I am used to. It was still plenty high, it was just more piercing to my eye as it reached its apex. I would call it a pretty strong ball light, no issues with the short irons either. Pretty solid performance.

Will the Nippon Modus 110 be your new gamer? For now, yes. As mentioned earlier, I wanted to look into a lighter iron shaft profile this year. I have tested a lot of lighter profiles that have not held up to faster swings or provided a strong ball flight. I feel like these are a stronger profile for a lighter weight shaft and produce a nice trajectory. I will keep with them and expect to see more improvements as the summer advances. Thanks again to Pluggedingolf and Nippon for this great opportunity!

Previous Iron Shaft: Accra Series Steel 105I (Soft Regular Flex)

How did the Nippon Modus 110 feel? Solid, super stable, and stout!  The Nippon Modus (NM) 110’s were a bit stiffer than the Accra shafts I was gaming.  I enjoyed the  stiffer shaft of the NM 110s.  Whether I flushed the shot or hit it a bit off center, the feel given back to me wasn’t a lot different.  That was a great feeling!

Did you gain distance with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts? I gained a minimum of 5+ yards a club, and that was in COLD Wisconsin weather. I was able to swing faster with  greater confidence that  the result would be what I needed for that shot.  I am looking forward to warmer weather to see if I gain a bit more distance.  I just hope my home course doesn’t have to move the tee boxes back!

Have you gained accuracy with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts?  I did see an improvement in my accuracy.  My dispersion with the NM 110’s was quite nice overall.  I tend to hit a baby fade with my Accra shafts, while the NM 110s gave me a straighter ball flight.  I felt way more confident  hitting my target with the NM 110s.

Has your ball flight changed with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts? I saw a decrease in height with the NM 110s.  Roughly 5 – 10 yards,  which was nice as i was getting a  bit more roll which can help on most of the courses I  play.

Additional notes: I would highly recommend anyone looking at replacing shafts or getting fitted for new irons, give the Nippon Modus Tour 110’s a chance.

Also, anyone reading  this should definitely apply to review items when Matt posts golfers needed for  a review for his PluggedInGolf website and podcast.  I had a great time playing  and reviewing  these shafts!

Will the Nippon Modus 110 be your new gamer? Yes!  The Nippon Modus 110’s are my gamer shafts!  It’s going to be great golf season!  Come on WARMER WEATHER!

Previous Iron Shaft: Nippon N.S. Pro Modus Tour 105

How did the Nippon Modus 110 feel?  Felt a bit firmer to me towards the grip than the 105, not quite as “whippy” but still easy to load.  Very smooth.  Stable.

Did you gain distance with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts?  Probably a little but negligible. They did lower my ball flight slightly and I get more roll out with these shafts.  They’re less “spinny” than the 105.

Have you gained accuracy with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts?  Yes, I felt I had more control with these shafts.  With the 105 I always had to play a draw.  With the 110 I could reliably hit a straight ball and/or play a draw.

Has your ball flight changed with the Nippon Modus 110 shafts?  My ball flight has always been extremely high, detrimentally so.  The 110 help me bring it down a bit which will be helpful getting to back pin locations I previously struggled with.  I think they’re straighter too.  If I miss left it’s not as snappy as it was with the 105.

Will the Nippon Modus 110 be your new gamer?  I think so, yes.  So far so good, I’ve been happy with them.
