ECCO Biom H5 Golf Shoe Review

50 Words or Less

The ECCO Biom H5 golf shoe combines innovative design and materials to produce a waterproof golf shoe with modern looks and high-end performance.

Introduction

After reviewing two previous iterations of ECCO’s Biom line of golf shoes, I quickly became a convert.  These days, it’s rare that I tee it up with anything other than ECCO golf shoes on my feet.  Needless to say, I was excited when the latest version, the ECCO Biom H5, appeared on my doorstep.  After unboxing them and feeling the material and seeing its bold design, I was even more intrigued.  I was lucky enough to get them on the course in early March in Minnesota.  Read on to hear my impressions and get more details on the shoe.

Looks

The ECCO Biom H5 appears clean and contemporary at the same time.  Its silhouette does a nice job of blending sneaker-style golf shoes with a more traditional profile.

ECCO states that the looks of the shoe are an homage to the Scottish Highlands and their stunning rugged beauty.  While it’s a first for me to hear of a shoe being inspired by a specific landscape, I can see it.  The outsole has a jagged look to it that does recall mountains.  While the upper looks similar to other shoes ECCO has released in the past (its Biom H4 EVR edition, for instance; review HERE) the outsole is totally unique.

I tested the ECCO Biom H5 in the white colorway.  I love the combination of the white and the blue sole.  It also comes in dark gray with black accents as well as a lighter gray with white accents and an orange sole.

Comfort

In my experience, ECCO has a unique approach to comfort.  It’s more about providing a level of comfort that is functional rather than pleasurable.  Some golf shoes have a cushy footbed that is so comfortable to step into it almost feels like plopping down on a deep, plush couch.  While this is alluring on the surface, there’s a trade-off with the ability to feel and use the ground effectively.

The ECCO Biom H5 feels considerably more rigid in the footbed but still has some give to it.  The upper is shaped such that it naturally hugs the foot.  There is plenty of room in the toe box but it doesn’t appear too square.  Overall, the comfort is very good.  I walk the vast majority of my rounds and for the past couple of seasons I’ve done so almost exclusively wearing a pair of ECCOs.

Performance

Aside from the visual nod to the landscape, the ECCO Biom H5 is designed with inclement weather in mind.  Lucky for me, I was able to get out for some early season testing in cold and wet conditions.  With the temperature on the first tee well below 40 and creeping up toward 50 by the end of the round and plenty of snow, mud, and slush left on the ground, I put these shoes through their paces right away.

Footwear is always a serious consideration during a round of golf but perhaps never more so than in conditions like these.  I was pleased to find that my feet stayed warm and dry throughout.  As far as the swing, I felt like the shoes were helping me get anchored into the turf and settled over the shot.  They feel substantial without being clunky.  I also like the way they look and feel standing over a putt.

The spikeless configuration on the sole is new.  It’s an unusual collection of irregular geometric shapes and I found that it did a great job of keeping me grounded throughout the swing, even in the tough conditions mentioned above.

Another new aspect to the ECCO Biom H5 is the one piece engineered knit sock built into the upper.  This adds a sporty aspect to the look and helps keep grass, dirt, and moisture out.  The upper itself is also waterproof, making the shoe an ideal choice if you’re an avid dew sweeper or the forecast calls for rain.

Interestingly, “Biom” alludes to the word “biometric” and indicates what ECCO refers to as “Natural Motion Technology.”  It’s an inside-out way of designing the shoe to fit the foot in a way that promotes stability and forward motion through the golf swing.  I love this sort of transparency and intentionality in the design process and can absolutely feel that technology at work on the course.

As is typically the case with ECCO, its insole is washable (hello summer) and removable in order to create a bit more width in the shoe.

Conclusion

Once again, ECCO has left me impressed.  Being a footwear-only company, they are serious about making the best possible golf shoes money can buy.  The ECCO Biom H5 is a cool-looking example of what the company can do, and I think it’s well worth its $229 price tag.

Saw them in store the other day and the “homage” sole looks terrible. I’ve historically loved Ecco shoes, but in recent years I’ve found they’ve become narrower and considerably more expensive. I know you can take the insole out to make them a bit wider, but I’ve found that makes them considerably less comfortable.

Ecco S Three was the first golf shoe that I found that was actually waterproof – very important in England, where I play. Any idea how the H5 compares to the S Three?
